“Boredom is fear’s dull cousin. It can numb the brain or it can stimulate creativity, especially in nature.” Richard Louv
Yes I’m an introvert, yes I get bored too…rarely but it happens… so:
What to do when you’re bored
Boredom enhance creativity. If creative ideas doesn’t just pop up into your head here’s what you can do (this is what I sometimes do). Go for a walk in the park and imagine you and only you have the power to save the world with 10 pics (I know it sounds silly but bear with me). Tree pics, flower pics, children playing pics, random pics… take random pics for the sake of umanity.
Recent studies on boredom and creativity suggest that boredom can actually enhance creativity. The day dreaming and just “doing nothing” we associate with boredom often create the perfect environment to produce our best ideas.
So, save umanity from destruction with your faboulous random pics. I usually take more than 10 pics because saving humanity is a serious business especially when you are bored :). Or you can just go for a walk in the park and enjoy your solitude, that works too.
What to draw when bored
Doodle, even if you don’t know how to or you don’t have any talent at drawing… I don’t either, that’s why I doodle. I called them organised doodles.
I even learned how to draw a mandala step by step, but not for the mumbo jumbo spiritual benefits, but because I like to draw organised doodles inside circles. It’s fun, creative and can be educative too if you’re doing it while listening to an audio book or a Ted talk (or whaever you want).
Give Zentangle a try
Don’t like mandalas? Try Zentangle Patterns… another organised doodles but with a fancy name. Read here more about Zentangle Patterns.
Basically I like to draw patterns (doodles) because I’m not good at drawing anything else and with patterns you can’t go wrong because you don’t need any talent, anyone can do it!
Dance like no one is watching
Like doodling, dancing doesn’t require any special skill or talent. A little dose of craziness doesn’t hurt… actually when it comes to dancing the the crazier the merrier.
I’m sure you have your own favorite dance music. Here is one of my favorite songs that gets out the crazy one (the crazy me).
Make your favorite comfort food, mine is porridge oats
You only need 4 ingredients: milk, oats, cinnamon & jam.
For one serving put 300 ml milk and 3 full spoons of oats. Let the milk and oats simmer for 20 min while stirring ocasionally, add cinnamon, jam and voila you got your comfort food… actually my comfort food.
Go shopping, go cheap
Go treasure hunting in a thrift shop if you like clothes with past. I like to imagine the life and personality of the previous owner, how is he/she like, and somehow I start to feel connected to a total stranger…and I come home with cool cheap clothes.
Here are my latest acquisitions:

Develop your critical thinking skills by reading smart books
Yes, I admit it: I had my new age years when I filtred my reality through new age concepts like “Law of atraction”, “Raise your vibration”, “Sincronicity”, “Dimensions”, “Densities” “Channeling”, “Energy work” (and sooo much more) but not anymore.
I don’t regret it (too much) because it has brought me where I am now, and with the help of these books (and other reality slaps) I’m healing from magical thinking while developing my critical thinking skills in the meantime.
Learn a new skill
I know it seems hard to learn something new but if you approach the learning process with curiosity it really isn’t that hard especially if you choose to learn to do something you like or it will benefit you in the future. No matter how hard it looks in the begining you’ll have the motivation to get over your monkey chattering mind (“it’s too hard”, “but I don’t wanna”, “let’s browse facebook or pinterest instead”)
What I did? I learned to make short videos with Filmora, I made one with Leonardo DiCaprio, it doesn’t matter it doesn’t have many views an youtube, for me it was a success just the learning process.
Declutter your drawers
It takes a little time but the results are worth it. After I declutter I always wonder “why didn’t I do it sooner?”.
I know why… boredom, procrastination, postponing. “I will not declutter today because I have so much (procrastination and other stuff) to do, maybe tomorow when I’ll have the right amount of motivation”. But motivation to do something I don’t like doesn’t come just like that. For me the Nike slogan works better than to wait for motivation. I “just do it”!
Engage your senses, show up to your life, practice mindfulness
Engage your senses right here, right now. You don’t have to meditate to do it but while doing it, it becomes like a meditation. Notice the sounds around you, your posture, your eye movement while you reading this words, and for 10 seconds notice your breathing.
Every mundane task flourishes when you engage your senses. It’s like getting off auto pilot and into the drivers seat. Transform boredom or mindlesness into mindfullness.
Because the inertia is to live more in my mind than in my life I got myself an app to ring every 30 minutes to remind me to “get down” from my mind and engage in whatever i’m doing, and as a result I’m enjoying whatever the day brings me, I’m more focused & calm.
Start a blog/site
If everything above fails you can make your own website with a specific name like “iambored.pro” or something like that, to post funny stuff (funny cats, cute babies, epic fails, funny meme, funny pictures… and other cool stuff) so that you won’t feel so guilty when you’re browsing mindlessly 9gag, boredpanda, buzzfeed, reddit, now you do it with a purpose, to get inspiration for your own site ;)))
Talking about funny memes and not feeling guilty for browsing more than you said you will:
