What is more natural than armpit hair? Not much to be honest. But society has long made armpit hair on women taboo. But now women are pushing against such beauty norms. A trend has flared up on social media of women sporting underarm hair. Some women take it a step further by dyeing the hair to draw extra attention.
Like most modern beauty trends, the shaved clean look developed from a marketing campaign. As women fought for more freedom around the 20’s, their dress code reflected it. With the evolution of the sleeveless dress (as well as more risqué dance moves), the razor companies were sure to imply that women wouldn’t go out without taking care of their unsightly hair. Since then it’s been the standard.
The unshaven trend has even taken off with some celebrities as well. Lady Gaga, always the first to push the envelope, sported dyed blue underarms to match her hair during the 2011 Much Music Awards.
But she wasn’t the first. All the way back in 1999, Julia Roberts showed up to a London premiere proudly displaying her natural look.
The notable Ben Hopper, a photographer from London has started a collection of photos entitled “Natural Beauty”. Every picture displays a natural woman proving that beauty is more than follicle deep.
