1. Akhal-Teke (Turkmenistan Horse)
It is the national emblem for Turmenistan. This breed is reputed for its speed, intelligence, endurance and distinctive metallic sheen. They are adapted to difficult climatic conditions. There are also believed to be the oldest existing breed of horses.
2. The Tinker Horse
It is also known as the Gypsy Horse or Gypsy Vanner in the USA. It is a breed of domestic horse with origins from the British Isles. It is small and has a solid built. It is believed to be the only broken-colored horse breed found in the British Isles.
3. The Friesian
Also called Frizian, its origin is from Friesland in the Netherlands. They are very graceful. This horse breed had faced extinction on many occasions, though the modern day Friesian horse has grown in numbers and popularity.
4. The Shire Horse
It is a breed of draft horse. It comes in many colors like black, bay and gray. This breed of horses have been popular for their strength as they were used to pull brewery wagons that were out to deliver ale to customers.
5. The Knabstrupper
Also know as Knabstrup, this horse is of Danish breed and has an unusual coat color. They have coat patterns which are solid or full leopard spotted coat. They are bred today in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Italy Switzerlan, USA and recently in Australia, New Zealand and the Czech Republic.
6. The Haflinger
This horse breed is also known as Avelignese. It was developed in Austria and Northern Italy in the late nineteenth century. They are relatively small and have a chest-nut color. They are described as energetic, well-muscled but smooth and elegant.
Also know as Malani, these are rare horse breeds that are found in the Marwar region of India. They are well known for their turning ear tips. They are a descendant from the native Indian ponies which have been crossed with Arabian horses and maybe a Mongolian influence. They were first bred by the traditional rulers of the western Indian Marwar region.
8. The Orlov Trotter
This horse breed is noted for its outstanding strength and speed. The breed is the most famous in Russia and was bred around the late 18th century by the Count Alexei Orlov. They are a cross of European mares of English, Dutch, Danish and Mecklenburg breeds with Arabian stallions.
9. The Percheron
It is a draft horse that originally came from the Huisne river valley in the west of France that was part of the former Perche province. They are mainly gray or black in color, muscular, intelligent and willing to work. Their exact origins are not known but it is believe its ancestors were present in the valley around the 17th century.
Also known as Pure Spanish Horse or PRE, the breed is from the Iberian Peninsula. It is believed that its ancestors have lived there for more than a thousand years. It has been known through out its history as a war horse and has been priced for nobility. It was used as a tool for diplomatic missions by the Spanish government.
11. The Norwegian Fjord Horse
It is also known as Fjord Horse. It is a small but very strong horse breed which could be found in the mountainous regions of western Norway. It is used as a draft horse due to its agility. It is one of the world’s oldest breeds and has been in use in Norway as farm horses for hundreds of years.
This is a free-roaming horse that was brought to the Americas by the Spanish. They are usually referred to as wild horses.
13. The Appaloosa
It is an American horse breed which is well known for its colorful spotted coat pattern. This color pattern has been an interest in studies in equine coat color genetics. This is because of its similarities linked with the leopard complex mutation.
14. The Morgan Horse
This breed of horse has been seen as the earliest breeds developed in the USA. They are used as coach horses and harness racing. They were also used as cavalry horses during the American Civil War by both warring sides.
15. The Arabian or Arab Horse
This horse breed gets its origin from the Arabian Peninsula. It has a very distinct head shape with a high tail carriage. It is most recognized horse breed in the world. With their speed, endurance, strong bone and refinement, they have been used to improve other breeds in the world.
